Kiosk / Display Design

interactive kiosk station“Kantuketan” (In Quest of Singing in Basque) originated as part of an overall effort by the Euskal Kultur Erakundea (Basque Cultural Institute) to reverse the decline of singing in the Basque language.

The goal: "to conserve a heritage and pass it on"

The cultural organization of the Iparralde or north side of the Basque Country graciously offered to share their exhibit with the North American Basque Organizations and the Basque-American community.

The original "Kantuketan" display was quite extensive and took a large room to exhibit. Something on this scale was not feasible for most Basque events, where space would be limited and often in outdoor settings. What the North American Basque Organization desired was something similar but in a compact, transportable form.

We worked closely with John Ysursa, PhD., NABO's project manager and used the interactive program created by the Basque Cultural Institute and their shared images to create six headphone-listening stations and touch screen monitors with a wide assortment of musical samples from traditional tunes all the way to hard rock.

kantueketan panel detailOur role in designing the portable displays and booth involved selecting computer hardware, touch screens, cabling and working with a framework made of standard shelving products, applying the images provided and designing new panels to surround the framework that would enhance the listening and viewing experience.

We designed two free-standing enclosures and a free-standing "story tower" that are all compact, collapsible and very colorful. They utilize images supplied by the Basque Cultural Institute laid out in a striking, vertical orientation as show below. We created a total of 16 panels for the project and coordinated the production and printing on teflon coated material that will prolong the life and color of the panels.

This exhibit is an ongoing effort to help viewers to reconnect with the collective Basque memory and to promote Basque singing to a new generation of Basque throughout North America.
